A collection of rare articles on Raja Ram Mohun Roy has been published by Sadharan Brahmo Samaj on 20th January, 2022. The book entitled ‘Ram Mohun Roy: Herald of New Modern Age’ edited by Dr. Asitabha Das and Dr. Partha Sarathi Das is a ‘compilation of some important essays on Ram Mohun Roy by eminent researchers’ which the publisher hopes will be helpful in understanding the persona of this international citizen’. The book begins with an autobiographical sketch that Ram Mohun Roy wrote to Mr. Gordon, which was later adopted by Miss Mary Carpenter in her book ‘The Last Days in England of the Rajah Rammohun Roy’s’.
Among the contributors are Rabindranath Tagore, the Poet Laureate, Pandit Sivanath Sastri (with supplementary notes added by Shri Amal Home), to name a few. Reminiscences of Maharshi Debendra Nath Tagore adds authenticity to the portrayal of the great reformer and contributions by the stalwarts of the nineteenth century, like Sir Banjendra Nath Seal, F. Maxmeuller, Surendra Nath Banerjee, Sir Gooroodas Banerjee, Shri Satish Chandra Chakravarti have brought out the impact of Roy in shaping the Renaissance in Bengal and leading to the awakening of India.
The book has been enriched by contributions from different parts of the globe as well as people from different religious, ethnological and social backgrounds. Written variously over a large time period these articles lend an idea of his impact and the relevance of his thoughts on society over time. In the editors’ own words ‘it is hoped that the present volume will succeed to a large extent in providing an analysis of Raja Ram Mohun Roy’s ideas and achievements in the light of eighteenth and nineteenth century traditions which were relevant to his activities and interests.’
